Herencia has announced the schedule for its highly anticipated 2026 pilgrimage events, which will once again bring together locals and visitors in the scenic Paraje de La Pedriza. The Culture Department of the Town Hall, in collaboration with local brotherhoods and the Cultural Association Los Roncones, has unveiled the celebrations in honor of San Isidro on May 16 and the Virgen de la Cabeza on May 30.
This year’s events will blend devotion, community engagement, music, children’s activities, and traditional cuisine. New additions aim to enhance participation among groups of friends and families, including the “Romería de Caldero y Tradición,” debuting during the San Isidro festivities.
Aitor Gallego de la Sacristana, the Culture Councilor, emphasized that the pilgrimage plans represent a significant evolution, introducing new cultural initiatives in La Pedriza. He noted that these events are a result of years of collaboration between the Town Hall, associations, and brotherhoods.
San Isidro: Food, Tradition, Inflatable Attractions, and Music
The first event, the Romería de San Isidro, will be held on Saturday, May 16. The program includes inflatable attractions for children from 6 PM to 9 PM, providing a family-friendly environment for the festivities.
One new feature will be the “Romería de Caldero y Tradición” cooking competition for groups of friends and families to prepare traditional local dishes in the area. Participants can make dishes like mojete, gachas, pisto, migas, caldereta, roasts, or rice, with the option for other traditional Manchego recipes.
A committee selected by the organizers will evaluate the submissions and award three prizes of 50 euros each. This initiative aims to recreate the communal atmosphere of the pilgrimage through shared meals and family recipes.
Music will start at 10 PM with Estopatí, a tribute band to Estopa. The party will continue into the early hours with DJs Isaac Romero and Koux, catering to a younger audience who wish to extend their night in La Pedriza.
Virgen de la Cabeza and Day of Castilla-La Mancha
The second pilgrimage, honoring the Virgen de la Cabeza, is set for Saturday, May 30. This event will feature a tortilla competition, with prizes of 30, 50, and 80 euros awarded for the best entries based on established criteria.
Music will again play a significant role, with The Peppers Club Band performing at 10 PM, followed by performances from Koreg Music, Xule García, and Agustín Montes from 12:30 AM onwards. The schedule continues the festive theme by combining live bands and DJ sets.
On Sunday, May 31, coinciding with the Day of Castilla-La Mancha, activities will continue in the Virgen de la Cabeza area. Inflatable attractions will be available from 12 PM to 3 PM, and at 1 PM, folklore groups from the Popular University will perform, celebrating Manchego traditions and the regional festivities.
Free Buses Available
As in previous years, the Town Hall will provide free bus services to facilitate attendance at the pilgrimages and ease transportation to Paraje de La Pedriza.
Buses will depart at 1:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 10:30 PM, and midnight, with return trips scheduled for 9 PM, 11 PM, 1 AM, 4 AM, and 6 AM. This service aims to reduce the use of private vehicles and ensure that people of all ages can participate in the events comfortably.
Thus, the San Isidro and Virgen de la Cabeza pilgrimages establish themselves as two weekends of community gathering centered on tradition, music, and gastronomy. La Pedriza will serve as the meeting point for a celebration that has become part of Herencia’s cultural calendar, each year bringing more residents together to celebrate the arrival of spring.
