Sergio García-Navas elaborates on SER about the “historic moment” of the Herencia Carnival following its declaration as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BIC).

The mayor of Herencia, Sergio García-Navas, spoke this Monday on Cadena SER during the program Hoy por Hoy Alcázar de San Juan to discuss the latest updates on the Carnival of Herencia 2026. This edition is significant due to a recent milestone: its designation as a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC) in the category of Intangible Heritage.

During the interview, the mayor emphasized the importance of this recognition as something that goes beyond just the festive calendar: it is a validation of a “living” celebration, created in the streets and maintained by generations of residents, associations, and groups that have preserved its identity over time.

A Carnival “to experience” from February 7 to 18

In his conversation with SER, García-Navas placed this year’s edition in a context of high anticipation and participation. The Carnival of Herencia will take place from February 7 to 18, 2026, featuring a diverse program designed for various audiences that combines tradition, popular culture, and major musical events.

The mayor highlighted the unique character of the festival and its ability to attract visitors while retaining its essence. He noted that the community is already gearing up for the grand festivities, with the street atmosphere growing week by week.

The Ofertorio aims high: record number of participants and 19 represented towns

One of the key topics during the interview was the Grand Ofertorio Parade, scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, which has once again solidified its status as one of the most attended events of the Herencia Carnival.

According to confirmed data, the parade will feature 3,334 participants from 31 groups, representing 19 towns across the provinces of Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Albacete, and Toledo. Additionally, nearly €24,000 in prizes will be distributed, awarded by a specialized jury stationed along the parade route.

The mayor emphasized that these figures illustrate the appeal of the Carnival and necessitate even tighter organization, logistics, and services to ensure smooth proceedings.

Enhanced safety, cleanliness, and services

García-Navas also discussed the special measures planned for this period, stressing the coordination among administrations and operational bodies to ensure the well-being of both residents and visitors.

Some of the announced measures for this year include the introduction of reusable and 100% recyclable cups at the Carnival Palace, aimed at reducing waste during peak days. There will also be an increase in portable restrooms and the installation of hand-washing stations, particularly in key areas where crowds gather.

The mayor took the opportunity to deliver a clear message: while organization and enhancements are crucial, they do not replace civic responsibility. Cleanliness and safety, he reminded, also depend on the cooperation of those enjoying the festivities.

An ephemeral museum to understand Carnival from within

The interview also highlighted the cultural and heritage aspects of this edition. Within this initiative is the exhibition “Herencia, where time becomes Carnival”, located in the Agustín Úbeda Exhibition Hall, which explores the memory, characters, sounds, and collective imagination of the festival.

The exhibit can be visited until February 18, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Carnival days, making it a recommended stop for both residents and visitors who want to understand why the Carnival of Herencia is much more than just a festive event.

A final message: identity, pride, and shared responsibility

During his visit to SER, Sergio García-Navas asserted that the BIC declaration places Herencia at a “historic moment” and reinforces the idea that Carnival is not just about programming and large numbers, but about identity, living heritage, and shared pride.

With the grand days approaching, the mayor encouraged everyone to experience the Carnival intensely, while also respecting it: taking care of the surroundings, following safety guidelines, and remembering that the success of the celebration fundamentally relies on the exemplary behavior of those who make it possible.
