Herencia will host the IV Conference on Cultural Heritage: “Cultural Heritage, Material and Immaterial” on April 23 and 24, serving as a meeting point for active educators in all non-university levels in Castilla-La Mancha.
The in-person event is organized by the Regional Center for Teacher Training and the Provincial Delegation of Education, Culture, and Sports of Ciudad Real, in collaboration with the Herencia Town Hall. It aims to highlight the value of local heritage as an educational tool and showcase the region’s rich heritage.
Local Heritage as an “Open Classroom”
The program emphasizes both monumental and ethnographic and immaterial heritage, focusing on the influence of the Mercedarian Order on the urban and historical-artistic development of Herencia, as well as the processes of preservation and enhancement of protected goods, using the Palace of the Mercedarians as a reference.
In addition to theoretical content, the program includes guided tours to identify heritage elements “on-site” and transfer that experience to educational activities inside and outside the classroom.
Program: Conferences, “Baroque Heritage” Route, and Music at the Parish
The first day (Thursday, 23rd) begins with registration and an institutional presentation, followed by a talk on the social role of the educational community in the protection and transmission of heritage. A central session in the morning will focus on the rehabilitation process of the Palace of the Mercedarians and a subsequent visit to the building.
In the afternoon, the program continues with a presentation on artistic education and heritage, the “Baroque Heritage” route, and a commented concert of historical organ music at the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception, concluding the day with a summary of findings.
Second Day: Carnival, Cheese Tradition, and Visit to Quhesalia
Friday, the 24th, is dedicated to exploring heritage and identity through two well-recognized perspectives in Herencia: a session focusing on the heritage value of the Herencia Carnival and its educational potential, and another proposal related to cheese-making traditions.
The morning will culminate in a trip to the vicinity of Quhesalia and activities at the Cheese Interpretation Center, featuring demonstrations of the “chozo,” esparto craftsmanship, and a tasting, before concluding the conference.
